Dear Toppenish Families,

Our elementary students had the chance to try something bright, fun, and delicious this week through our USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program: yellow watermelon!

This program gives our students the opportunity to sample fresh fruits and vegetables during the school day, including some they may not have tried before. Earlier this spring, students were introduced to items like guava and red kiwi, and for our last month of the school year, our Food Services Department ordered yellow watermelon as another exciting taste test experience.

Fun fact: Yellow watermelon is actually the original watermelon. It grew wild in Africa and can even be found in ancient Egyptian records!
To help extend the learning beyond the taste test, we created another fun activity sheet to go along with our fruit of the month. This sheet should come home with your child this week. If it does not make it home, you can download it below.

We are grateful for programs like this that help introduce students to new foods, encourage healthy choices, and make learning about fruits and vegetables fun!
